About the event
Shawls come in an endless variety of shapes, stitches, colours and constructions, and once you begin exploring the possibilities, the ideas never stop flowing. In this hands-on, creativity-fuelled workshop, you’ll learn how to design your very own shawl from concept to creation.
Over three inspiring hours, you’ll explore different shawl shapes, experiment with direction and texture, and discover how to let your yarn “speak” to you as you bring your design to life. Whether you’re a confident beginner or a seasoned maker looking to unleash your design potential, this workshop will open a world of shawl-making possibilities.
What you will learn
The most common shawl shapes (triangular, asymmetrical, crescent, rectangular and more)
How direction of work affects shape, drape and style
How to choose stitch patterns that complement your yarn and desired effect
Ways to incorporate colour, stripes, and texture to elevate your design
Materials and tools
Please bring:
8 ply yarn in light colours, 1 variegated for experimentation.
A range of crochet hooks suitable for your yarn
Stitch markers
Scissors
A notebook, graph paper or sketchbook for planning your shawl design
A tape measure
Coloured pencils, 4mm, 5mm & 6mm hooks
Pre-requisite skills
Confidence in basic crochet stitches

3 hours of expert instruction from internationally renowned workshop facilitator Jenny King of Jenny King Designs in a class of a maximum of ten participants
Morning tea including a light snack and tea and coffee

About the facilitator
Designer, author and qualified teacher, Jenny is the founder, director and CEO of Jenny King Designs. She was a Finalist in the 2025 Crochet Designer of the Year Award at the Australian Yarn Awards.
Her achievements include the following:
